Beastie Boys Reveal Time When MCA Stage-Crashed Aerosmith on Fallon

The Beastie Boys Mike Mike D Diamond and Adam Ad-Rock Horovitz spoke about their new memoir, the time Adam MCA Yauch stage-crashed an Aerosmith and Run-D.M.C. show, the art of making mixtapes and more on The Tonight Show Wednesday.

During the interview, Ad-Rock told two wild stories about the late MCA, who died from cancer in 2012. In one story, the Beastie Boys were on tour opening for Run-D.M.C. around the time that their Walk This Way collaboration with Aerosmith was a massive hit. Aerosmiths Steven Tyler and Joe Perry were scheduled to perform the song alongside Run-D.M.C. at a show in Miami, and Ad-Rock noted that the hip-hop outfits DJ, Jam Master Jay, had volunteered to play bass on the song.

So the song starts, people go crazy and then Yauch runs out with this bass, Ad-Rock recalled. You just look at the Aerosmith guys and theyre like, Who is this guy? And then all of a sudden he goes up to Joe Perry and is trying to go back-to-back with him, like a rock guitar player. And Joe Perry was like, you could see him very uncomfortable and Yauch was chasing him around, running around backwards trying to play guitar.

Ad-Rock also recalled an incredibly intricate prank MCA played on him that involved a strange fan who gave Ad-Rock a mysterious ring at a show in 1992. Fifteen years later, Ad-Rock found the same ring in his backpack, and after a week of freaking out about it, MCA finally copped to dropping it there himself.

Elsewhere in the interview, Jimmy Fallon shared a old home video of him lip-synching the Beastie Boys 1992 hit, So Watcha Want, while later Ad-Rock and Mike D discussed the lost art of making mixtapes and the multiple steps it took to actually listen to them. The music would be on a thing, Ad-Rock joked. It wouldnt be on your phone, it would be on this other thing. And then you would have to take that other thing and put it in another thing, and then youd have to put a thing in that and put it on your ear.
