Ed Wood Personal Items Hit the Auction Block


Here is your chance to own some of the best personal items belonging to arguably cinemas worst director: A collection of notebooks, candid photos, press clippings and more amassed by infamous B-movie extraordinaireEd Wood, the filmmaker responsible for the critically reviled cult classics Plan 9 From Outer Space and Glen or Glenda and the inspiration behind the Tim Burton biopic of the same name, has hit the auction block.

RR Auction in Boston is sellingthe contents of a leather briefcase and two trunks that Wood used to store his various publicity-related ephemera, many of which aresigned by the director. Bidding on the Wood items is open now through March 18th, the Poughkeepsie Journal reports.

Its a peek into who Ed Wood was. You can see his actual papers. Its pretty remarkable, said RR Auction executive vice president Bobby Livingston. Among the more unique items featured in the collection which currently has a high bid of over $3,300 are four notebooks and Plan 9 press materials featuring Woods notations, a program from Woods early play Casual Company that boasts an inscription from Wood to his parents and one lined notebook page of Woods typed and handwritten notes on sexual terminology, 8.5 x 11, with typed dictionary definitions of the words Aphrodisiac, Testosterone, and Philter or Philthe.'

Other items on the block include a signed program and script from Woods 1949 play The Blackguard Returns, a set of lobby cards from Woods films and a 27 x 41 Plan 9 From Outer Space one-sheet. The items, which were culled from curator James Collings collection, are accompanied by letters of provenance from Woods biographer Rudolph Grey and actress Maila Nurmi, who portrayed Vampira in Plan 9.
