When garage-rock outfit FIDLAR was gearing up to release 2015sToo, Ryan Baxley brother-in-law of singer Zac Carper, director of the groups music videos and unofficial fifth band member came up with the idea. He called it#MatineeMonday: a weekly series of one-to-15-second-long Instagramvideos of the bandmates reenacting scenes from movies they find inspiring. The rules aresimple:1) Everything must be filmed with the iPhone camera in the Instagram app, 2) no retakes of individual shots and 3) no money can be spent on costumes, props or sets. Thus far,FIDLAR havereleased52 of the videos watch a massive and hilarious supercut of all of them above.
When you only have 15 seconds of video, it forces you to get creative, says Baxley. I made The Matrix clip first, which led to the idea of having the band start a reoccurring series that we could roll out on their Instagram. All of the #MatineeMonday videos were shot on an iPhone without any editing. Out of the 52 that we made, I think we spent a total of $1.75 on costumes, sets and props.
The project has beena good way for FIDLAR to keep creative while on the road, says bassist-vocalist Brandon Schwartzel. Wed make all this stuff when we had time off at home, and then wed get on the road and fall into the routine of drive, show, after-show, sleep, he explains. You get into this monotonous auto-pilot thing. At least for me, it was a way to keep using my brain in a creative way. Pre-FIDLAR, the constant need to be making stuff with Ryan was there. Its now become a huge part of the band, but if FIDLAR didnt exist, wed still be sitting around the house trying to think of something weird or cool to make.
