For the last 30 years, Oct 21st, 2015, has only been remembered for one thing: Back to the Future Part II. Since the middle chapter in the time-traveling trilogy came out in 1985, audiences have fixated on that date the day that Marty McFly, Doc Brown, and Jennifer Parker arrive in a mythical landscape of hoverboards, multiple Jaws sequels and hydrated pizzas. When Back to the Future Day finally came, the world lost its collective mind, and there was no way that the stars of the movie were going to miss out on the fun.
Last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the opening monologue was interrupted by a run-of-the-mill tear in the space-time continuum (a surprisingly common problem for talk show hosts why else do you think Lenos jokes always seemed like they were a few decades old?). Suddenly, a vintage DeLorean rolled onto the stage in a puff of smoke, and out of the flying car popped who else but Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, dressed in their classic costumes and as befuddled by Kimmels set as Marty was by Jaws 19. The 77-year-old Lloyd still a working actor, with three films in the can this year has hardly aged a day. Such is the upside of time travel.
The temporally confused duo launched into some solid shtick with Kimmel, mourning the death of Johnny Carson, bemoaning the fact that selfies have overshadowed the limitless potential of the iPhone, and cringing at the idea of the Cronut. And if youve ever wanted to hear Doc Brown make a Grindr joke, this is the bit for you.
Fox joined Kimmel for an interview later in the show, during which the actor reflected on how he was sure that Teen Wolf would kill his career, and took a close look at how the crotch of Martys action figure fundamentally betrayed the character.
