FX has renewed American Crime Storyfor a third season that will explore the murder of designer Gianni Versace by serial killer Andrew Cunanan, Deadline reports.
Season Three will be based on Maureen Orths 1999 book Vulgar Favors, which examines Versaces murder on the steps of his Miami Beach mansion and the failed manhunt for Cunanan. The book also attempts to paint a psychological portrait of Cunanan, who killed four other people and ultimately took his own life.
Season Three of the Ryan Murphy anthology series will shoot next year, around the same time as Season Two, which will tackle the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and is based on Douglas Brinkleys book, The Great Deluge: Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. FX reportedly decided to fast track Season Three after reading a script from Tom Rob Smith, who will write several episodes over the course of the season.
Murphy is expected to direct the first episodes for both Katrinaand Versace/Cunanan. The filmmaker earned an Emmy nomination for directing episode one of the shows hit first season, The People v. O.J. Simpson.
In all, American Crime Storyearned10 Emmy awards this year, including Outstanding Miniseries. The show also swept the miniseries performance categories with Courtney B. Vance, Sarah Paulson, Sterling K. Brown and Regina King all taking home trophies.
