Metallica promised to shake the rafters of The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson during their residency this week, and they kicked things off last night with a thunderous run-through of the first song they ever recorded, Hit the Lights. The band played the song after sitting for an interview with the Scottish host, who will be leaving the show on December 19th, in which they talked about the re-release of their documentary Some Kind of Monster and joked about The Late Late Shows horse character having a coke problem.
Ferguson introduced the bands song which first appeared on the 1982 compilation Metal Massacre and opened their 1983 debut, Kill Em All with the help of his demon-eyed, Mohawk-sporting skeleton sidekick Geoff. Frontman James Hetfield played a white flying V guitar similar to the one he used whilerecording the song more than three decades ago, and drummer Lars Ulrich stood up to play the songs rumbling middle section.
Metallica will be putting out a two-disc, 10th-anniversary Blu-ray edition of the documentary Some Kind of Monster, which chronicled their near-breakup in the early 2000s, on November 24th. That same week, the group will also be putting out a 12-inch of Lords of Summer, the song they debuted earlier this year as the only constant song on their Metallica by Request set list. The vinyl will contain the first pass studio version of the song as well as a version of it recorded live in Rome on its A-side, while the flipside will contain a laser etching of the groups M logo. The record will be available on Black Friday (November 28th) as part of Record Store Day.
