Forrest Gump to Be Re-Released to IMAX Theaters

The heartwarming 1994 Tom Hanks epic Forrest Gump is getting another run. The film, which received the Best Picture Oscar that year, is headed to IMAX screens on September 5th to mark its 20th anniversary, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It follows the unlikely exploits of a slow-witted yet uniquely skilled man as he finds himself on the periphery of numerous of historical events and at the center of life-changing events for his friends.

When the film, based on a novel by Winston Groom, originally opened in theaters on July 6th, 1994, it went on to become a critical and box office success, earning $677 million worldwide and six of the 13 Academy Awards it was nominated for, including Best Actor for Hanks and Best Director for Robert Zemeckis. It also won awards at the BAFTAs, Directors Guild of America and Golden Globes. Its large cast also prominently features Robin Wright, Gary Sinise, Sally Field and Haley Joel Osment, among others.

Forrest Gump currently ranks Number 31 on the list of all-time highest domestic-grossing films, just $4.5 million behind the 2010 film Alice in Wonderland, THR reports.

Although Hollywood execs enjoy placing their chips on theatrical re-releases, they dont always perform the way theyre expected to. The Lion Kings 2011 3-D re-release may have netted the Disney picture $94 million domestically, but the Harrison Ford adventure classic Raiders of the Lost Ark onlytook in an extra $3 million.
