Nashville based singer-songwriter Cale Tyson gets back to basics for the new Narcissist EP, out February 1st. And with the song Red Blooded Fools, the spartan set (for which all titles are stylized in lowercase) focuses on contemplation.
Written and recorded over a productive three-day period in Tysons bedroom, each of the EPs four tracks is laid bare with minimalist production. Tyson handles most of the parts himself, including layering his own vocals. For the Texas-bred former trad-country stalwart, its another step away from what was beginning to feel like an artistic pigeonhole.
I like this stripped-down, raw direction because it allows me to convey exactly what I want to convey, void of any distraction, Tyson says of the new EP, the follow-up to 2016s wide-ranging, R&B-influenced Careless Soul album. It just feels like Im pulling my heart out of my chest and saying Here you go.

Whisper soft and confessional, the romantically fraught Red Blooded Fools premieres on Rolling Stone Country today, telling the age-old tale of a good thing gone to waste. With ethereal background harmonies from Jackie Cohen, an angelic harp by Timbre Cierpke and keys courtesy of Mike Whiteside, the story starts off carefree, but Tysons characters are apparently playing by different rules. Deception, pride and miscommunication come into play as the couple break up and move on but Tyson figures nobody is really right or wrong, since nobody really had a clue what they were doing in the first place.
Red Blooded Fools was the last track I wrote for the EP, he explains. It deals with the two sides of an ending relationship and how both people can be foolish, in their own respective ways. One might be a fool for leaving, one might be a fool for staying.
Narcissist arrives on February 1st and also includes the tracks Not Healthy Anymore, Shouldnt Tell U, and What Doesnt Kill You (Thad Kopec Remix). Tyson will support Joshua Hedley at Schubas in Chicago on February 8th.
