Today became a huge day for equality when the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act this morning in a 5-4 decision. The court also ruled in a split decision that opponents of same-sex marriage in California dont have the legal standing to challenge a lower courts decision overturning Proposition 8, a ballot measure banning gay marriage that voters approved in 2008. Actors, musicians and politicians, including Lady Gaga, Ben Affleck, Demi Lovato, Leonardo DiCaprio, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and President Obama took to Twitter to express their support for the decisions, which represent major victories for gay rights.
