Spring Breakers Sequel Written by Irvine Welsh in the Works

Its hard to follow up a gangsta, Britney Spears-singing James Franco, but a sequel for the demented 2012 filmSpring Breakersis in the works. According to Screen Daily, the second installment will be directed by Jonas Akerlund (Spun) from a script by author Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting), though neither Franco or original director Harmony Korine are currently involved in the project.

Its not a direct sequel, although there are allusions to some characters in the original, says Vincent Maraval of Paris-based production company Wild Bunch, noting that the films cast will be a mixture of new and familiar faces. None of the originalSpring Breakersstars (Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine) are attached to the film, though Maravals vague statement doesnt emphasize which actors will reprise their original roles.

The original film was at least for Korines standards a rare dalliance with the mainstream, utilizing a high-profile cast and semi-large budget. But the plot was still twisted, even compared to his earlier, more experimental work (likeTrash HumpersandGummo), with Franco starring as Alien, a rapper-gangster who bails out a group of rowdy girls from prison and takes them under his shady wing.

Even if there wont be any Aliens involved in the sequel (titled Spring Breakers: The Second Coming), its still shaping up to be a weird, wild ride. The basic plot finds another group of Spring Breakers battling with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them.

Along with Wild Bunch, the film is being produced by Muse Productions and Mars Films.
