Kerri Rawson, the daughter of infamous serial killer Dennis Rader aka BTK Killer, has broken her silence in her first television interview. Its part of a two-hour 20/20 documentary that will air on ABC on February 1st.
Rader tortured and murdered 10 people in Wichita, Kansas, beginning with the murder of a family of four in 1974. Through his decades of killing, he taunted local media and police with letters detailing how he murdered his victims and gave himself the moniker BTK, which stood for Bind, Torture, Kill. He was arrested in 2005 and pled guilty to 10 counts of first degree murder. Rader is serving 10 consecutive life sentences.
In the documentary, Rawson discusses her childhood and how she and her family dealt with the aftermath of discovering her fathers secret identity. In a new trailer, Rawson details in an interview with ABC News correspondent Deborah Roberts the day she first found out that her father, Dennis Rader, was arrested. She said it was a normal day when she heard a knock on her door. He said he was the FBI, she explained, adding that she had no cause to expect to see an FBI agent.
He asked, Do you know who BTK is? I was like, You mean the person whos wanted for murders back in Kansas?, she said. And then he says, Your dad has been arrested as BTK.'
Rawson said she was feeling mainly just shock after the FBI unveiled her fathers arrest and questioned her about Rader. I was trying to almost alibi my father, she said. I was like, My fathers a good guy, hes like Boy Scout leader, president of the church. Im like, Youve got the wrong man.'
The documentary also features interviews with Kerris husband, Darian Rawson, as well as several people who worked on the BTK case, including former District Attorney Nola Foulston, former Assistant District Attorney Kevin OConnor, detectives Kelly Otis and Tim Relph. Family members of BTK victims Beverly Fox and Jeff Davis are also interviewed, among others.
