This aint Disneyland. This is the Bronx. Enter the thrilling new trailer for Baz Luhrmanns Netflix musical-drama The Get Down. In the clip, two teenagers, Ezekiel (Justice Smith) and Mylene (Herizen Guardiola), fall in loveamid the crumbling, crime-filled cityscape of New York City in 1977 while pursuing their dreams of fame.

The intense trailer filled with rapping, romance, gospel singing and DJ scratching previews the drama ahead in the culture-smashing series, created by Baz Luhrmann and executive produced by Nas. The show will trace the birth of hip-hop, along with the simultaneous rise of disco and punk, while following a group of young musicians, dancers and graffiti artists. The first six installments of the 13-episode first season will premiere worldwide on August 12th.

In addition to Justice Smith and Guardiola, The Get Down stars Jaden Smith, Shameik Moore (Dope), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Jimmy Smits (Sons of Anarchy) and several newcomers, including one Luhrmann discovered rhyming in the subway in the Bronx, as he recently explained at the Tribeca Film Festival.

The show will feature a narrator a rapper played by Daveed Diggs delivering rhymes written by Nas, whom Luhrmann described as a huge creative force in the production. The series will utilizes a crew of hip-hop founding fathers including Grandmaster Flash and Kurtis Blow as advisors.
