Veronica Mars Film Gets Release Date

Veronica Mars fans investments will pay off sooner than expected: the film now has a release date of March 14th, 2014.

On March 13th of this year, series creator Rob Thomas launched a Kickstarter campaign for the movie, and fans responded in a big way; according to Reuters, more than 31,000 devotees backed the project in less than 24 hours, and the pledge total skyrocketed to $5.7 million. The film was originally set for a limited theatrical run before hitting the on-demand and digital circuit. But in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Thomas said the movie (which was shot this past summer over 23 days) will now receive a larger national release.

Were not going to dribble it out there, he says. There are smart ways to do a movie of this size and we chose none of them. We are a low-budget movie with big set pieces and 60 speaking roles. A murder mystery in a house would have been more cost-effective. But I think we have managed to pull it off.

Last month, star Kristen Bell rewarded the films backers with a four-minute documentary clip about the project in which she explained the basic plot and gave updates on the series characters. The film will find Veronica (Bell) living in New York and dating Stosh Piz Piznarski (Chris Lowell). When she discovers that her old flame, Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring), has been charged with murder, she sets out to help by returning to Neptune, California, the setting of the TV series.

Thomas also teased the film at this summers edition of Comic-Con. It sort of has and this is a weird reference but a Godfather III theme to it, he said. As we find Veronica in the movie, she has not worked as a private detective since the last time you saw her in Season Three, and so part of the movie is her getting pulled back into this life that she thought she left behind.
