Janelle Monae Electrifies SNL

Miley Cyrus might have tried to steal the show with her twerking return on Saturday Night Live last night, but Janelle Monae made her Studio 8-H debut with some serious moves of her own. The singer delivered a high-energy burst of retro soul-pop in the form of two tracks from her new album, The Electric Lady.

Beginning with the frantically-paced Dance Apocalyptic, Monae took the stage wearing all white with black boots, on a stage set with a blinding white-and-black color scheme. She skittered wildly across the stage as her band, including guitar, bass, keyboard players, horn section, drummer, bongo player and backup singers kept the beat going behind the sci-fi scenario.

For the second act, she returned to the stage with the new albums title track, bringing down the pace but turning up the heat with the Nineties R&B soul jam. Fancy footwork was on display yet again, including a tight moonwalk across the stage.
