Despite leaving Rio with a gold medal, Ryan Lochte emerged as the 2016 Summer Olympics biggest loser after the swimmer fabricated a story about being robbed following a night out partying. On Last Week Tonight, John Oliver continued to pry into Lochtegate.
After creating the fake story about the robbery, Lochte proceeded to hightail it out of Brazil and get back to America, leaving the three other swimmers from that night back in Rio; police eventually questioned all three, exposing Lochtes lie. While his teammates were detained by authorities, Lochte the purest form of the chemical element Bro was already back in America offering a bullshit apology, Oliver said.
Lochte eventually came clean about what actually happened that night, where he and the swimmers urinated outside a gas station and destroyed a soap dispenser before they were approached by security guards, who drew their firearms and demanded that the swimmers reimburse them for the damage they caused. However, Americas opinion of Lochte has forever been tarnished.
People are right to be angry here because Lochtes behavior wasnt just shitty and entitled, hes also ruined himself for us. Four years ago, he was Americas favorite sweet, dumb merman, Oliver said. The fact that Lochte is a total asshole is not remotely surprising; its just that it makes him a lot less fun now. So as we say goodbye to the Rio Olympics, sadly, we must also say farewell to one of Americas favorite idiots.
