Stephen Colbert and Vice President Joe Bidenheld a family meeting with America on Tuesdays Late Show to talk about the sudden changes were collectively experiencing as a nation.
We know youre worried about the changes the familys been going through. Colbert said, insinuating the reaction following the election of Donald Trump. It happens to every family, but Im telling you, this terrible feeling youre having right now, its not permanent. Itll be over in four years, maybe eight.
Colbert and Biden then constructed a series of metaphors to help reassure viewers that things should be okay in Trumps America. Youve got to always do your best to mow the lawn. Doesnt the matter that somebody else is about to get the job of mowing the lawn after you, even though as far as you can tell that person has never touched a lawnmower in their life, Colbert said.

Look kid, it doesnt matter whos mowing it. The point is, its the greatest lawn in the world, and no matter our differences, were all responsible for its upkeep, Biden said. Ive got to believe that, in their heart, the next mower is going to do the best they can to make sure that lawn, that everyone feels safe to have a picnic on it. But his best joke was when Colbert told Biden to teach America about the birds and the bees and Biden immediately said: Theyre both disappearing at an alarming rate. Both bird and bee populations, theyre plummeting.
Earlier in the day, Biden sent shockwaves through Washington when he told a reporter that he would be running for president in 2020. Sure, what the hell, why not, Biden reasoned to the reporter in response to the 2020 question. On The Late Show, the Vice President admitted its unlikely hell seek the Oval Office, but hell never say never.
Im a great respecter of fate. I dont plan on running again but to say you know whats going to happen in four years is irrational, Biden said. I cant see the circumstance in which Id run, but You dont know whats going to happen.
