See Wistful First Trailer for Terrence Malicks Song to Song

Terrence Malicks Song to Song, an all-star drama that takes place against the backdrop of the Austin music scene, has revealed its first trailer ahead of its SXSW debut.

Soundtracked by Del Shannons Runaway, the trailer sets up the films plot although plot is a loose construct in Malicks recent films as Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara portray a pair of indie rockers that fall in love in the Texas capital. Complicating matters is Michael Fassbenders smooth-talking music mogul and a waitress played by Natalie Portman, with love triangles developing between the characters.

We thought we could just roll and tumble. Live from song to song, kiss to kiss, Maras character says in voiceover.

As evidenced by the trailer, Song to Song which was partially filmed during the 2012 Austin City Limits festival features cameos by Red Hot Chili Peppers and Iggy Pop. Arcade Fire, Patti Smith, John Lydon, Florence & the Machine and Iron & Wine are also among the 2012 ACL artists who are rumored to appear in the film.

However, Song to Song has undergone extensive editing over the past four years, with Christian Bale admittedly doubtful that his brief role made the final cut. Other actors rumored to appear in the movie include Benicio Del Toro, Cate Blanchett, Val Kilmer and Haley Bennett.

Following its SXSW debut on March 10th, Song to Song permeates into New York and Los Angeles theaters on March 17th.
