Game of Thrones, Mad Men, House of Cards and Transparent are among the shows that received multiple nominations in major categories for the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards. Game of Thrones alone received 24 nominations. Better Call Saul, Louie, Homeland, Veep and Orange Is the New Black also got notable nods. The awards ceremony, which Brooklyn Nine-Nine actor Andy Samberg will host, will be broadcast live on Fox on September 20th at 8 p.m. EST.
HBOs unstoppable fantasy series Game of Thrones earned nominations for Outstanding Drama Series, Supporting Actor (Peter Dinklage) and Supporting Actress (Lena Headey and Emilia Clarke), among many others. The advertising-and-alcoholismfocused Sixties period piece Mad Men, which ended its run this year, scored nominations forOutstanding Drama Series and acting nods for Jon Hamm, Elisabeth Moss and Christina Hendricks. Netflixs presidential corruption odyssey House of Cards landed nominations in four similar categories, with a nominations in the Drama Series category and for Kevin Spaceys, Robin Wrights and Michael Kellys acting. Also notable was the Academys recognition of Amazons transgender-themed family drama Transparent, which is up for two major categories, Outstanding Comedy Series and Lead Actor for Jeffrey Tambor.

Other notable recognitions include Better Call Saul, which nabbed nominations in the drama series and acting categories (for Bob Odenkirk and Jonathan Banks), Inside Amy Schumer (Outstanding Variety Series) and a Lead Actress in a Drama Series nod for Tatiana Maslany for her nuanced character in Orphan Black.
Snubs this year include Foxs hip-hop industry drama Empire, which could have made it into the Drama category, though the Academy did recognize Taraji P. Hensons acting, and consistent ratings blockbuster The Big Bang Theory, whose Jim Parsons is often nominated. Also, though The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt scored a nomination, its star Ellie Kemper was not recognized for her indefatigably ebullient character. And Showtimes drama The Affair, which made critical waves for its multifaceted acting and storytelling, was also overlooked.
As with last years nominations, the Academy is beginning to look beyond traditional TV platforms for quality programming. Each of the outstanding drama and comedy categories feature notable Internet-only shows (Amazons Transparent and Netflixs Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt for comedy, and Netflixs House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black for drama). Moreover, the comedy category contains only two over-the-air programs (Parks and Recreation and the ubiquitous Modern Family) and drama recognizes only one (Downton Abbey).
The nominations were read by Orange Is the New Blacks Uzo Aduba and So You Think You Can Dances Cat Deely on Thursday at an event in Los Angeles. Bruce Rosenblum, the chairman and CEO of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, also surprised both hosts with the news that they had been nominated. Aduba, whos now up for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, visibly jumped at the news. That was not in rehearsal, she exclaimed. No way. Oh, my God.
