True Detective Season Three Unveils Moody First Teaser

Mahershala Ali is on the case in the upcoming third season of True Detective in a new teaser trailer released by HBO Sunday night. The Oscar-winning actor stars in the new season of the anthology series, which premieres in January 2019, alongside Mamie Gummer, Stephen Dorff, Scoot McNairy and Carmen Ejogo.

In the one-minute clip, which aired ahead of the Sharp Objects finale, Alis character, Arkansas state police detective Wayne Hays, is revealed at several different ages as he investigates a case.

Before you ever knew me, I wasnt scared much, he intones in a voiceover. That wasnt a fear for me. Things Ive seen, things I know, wouldnt do anything but cause harm. My whole brains a bunch of missing pieces. The series of clips ends with him stating, I want to know the whole story.

Season 3, set in the Ozarks, will unfurl a mysterious crime that plays out in three separate time periods. Ejogo plays AmeliaReardon, a schoolteacher with a connection to two missing children in the timeline set in 1980.

True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto returned to pen the third season, and Daniel Sackheim and Jeremy Saulnier both stepped into the directors chair for the episodes. A specific airdate has not yet been announced.
