Star Wars, Deadpool Lead 2016 MTV Movie Awards Nominations

Star Wars: The Force Awakens may not have won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, but its getting another shot at winning some major hardware. MTV announced the nominees for the 2016 MTV Movie Awards, and the latest installment of the beloved space saga blasted ahead of the field with 11 nods (including two different honorees in the Best Virtual Performance category). But walking away with the Golden Popcorn for Movie of the Year wont be easy, as J.J. Abrams space opera will be squaring off against box office behemoths Avengers: Age of Ultron, Creed, Jurassic World, Straight Outta Compton and the newly released Deadpool.

The MTV Movie Awards are known for featuring more offbeat categories than the Oscars or the Golden Globes, and this year is no exception. The coveted Best Kiss category findsMorena Baccarin and Ryan ReynoldsDeadpool makeout session squaring off against the likes of Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornans hurts-so-good smooching from Fifty Shades of Grey.

Deadpool and Star Wars will go head-to-head in the battle for Best Fight, but both will go againstthe Fury Road throwdown between Max and Furiosa and Leonardo DiCaprios lopsided skirmish with a protective mama bear in The Revenant. The years biggest shock was reserved for the more traditional categories, as Baccarin raced past Brie Larsons Oscar-winning turnfrom Room in order to snag the last spot for Best Female Performance (Larson did manage to landa Breakthrough Performance nod, however).

This yearalso marks the first time that MTV is recognizing non-fiction stories. In addition to the Best Documentary category (in which the Oscar-winning Amy has been nominated alongside similarly urgent films like the campus rape expos The Hunting Ground), there will also be a True Story category devoted to narrative films based on actual events. For the latter, Straight Outta Compton and The Revenant will vie against Oscar also-ransJoy and Steve Jobs to be that awards first champion.

The 2016 MTV Movie Awards will air on MTV on April 10th at 8pm ET and PT. Dwayne The Rock Johnson and Kevin Hart willco-host this years ceremony.Visit MTVfor the full list of nominations.
