Watch One Direction Softly Croon Night Changes at 2014 AMAs

In contrast to bombastic performances by Taylor Swift and Iggy Azalea, One Direction took an understated approach to their gentle romantic ballad Night Changes at Sunday nights American Music Awards.

The group performed the single from their latest album Four in the middle of a simulated field, showcasing each of the five singers vocals.

One Direction is shaping up to have a big night at the AMAs, winning Artist of the Year, Favorite Band, Duo or Group Pop/Rock and Favorite Pop/Rock Album (for 2013sMidnight Memories).

These songs split the difference between big, splashy Eighties pop rock and more elegant Seventies flavors, Jon Dolan wrote in his review of Four. As always, the vocal duties are divvied up in ways that highlight the singers similarities, placing weapons-grade hottie Harry Styles and take-him-or-leave-him Irishman Niall Horan in the same democratic swirl of desire.
