Chers Fallon Takeover: Icon Talks Bullsh-t Impressions, Sings I Got You Babe

Cher made a surprise appearance on The Tonight Show to perform her single I Got You Babe with the cast of The Cher Show, a Broadway musical about her life and career. Host Jimmy Fallon dedicated his entire episode to the singer to celebrate the musical.

In the performance, Cher joins actress Micaela Diamond, who plays her onstage, as well as actor Jarrod Spector, who plays Sonny Bono. Midway through the two actors duet of I Got You Babe the real Cher, clad in sparkling pants and a purple fur vest, appears and replaces Diamond to finish the duet. The singer also joined the cast for a performance of If I Could Turn Back Time, with the three actresses that portray her Stephanie J. Block, Teal Wicks and Diamond kicking off the song before Cher took the lead and the cast harmonized on the chorus.

Fallon also caught up with the icon about her recent endeavors, including her return to touring, her role in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and Dancing Queen, Chers ABBA covers album and first LP in five years. The host gushed about her rendition of Fernando and began singing the song while trying, and failing, to emulate Chers timbre. Cher humored him, but when Fallon asked what she thought of people doing impressions of her, she said no one gets it right and pointed out that his attempt was terrible.

I have never heard anybody who did a very good one, she said, adding with a laugh, They make some noises and facial expressions, and I try to find myself in there, and its so much bullshit.

Beyond peoples poor takes on Cher impressions, Fallon acknowledged that many also love to sing her songs, but no one has her voice. To riff on that, the pair did lip sync karaoke to Believe. However, rather than using the original recording, they sang along to tape recorded from random people at a karaoke bar attempting the tune.

The Cher Show opened on Broadway in December and is currently playing at the Neil Simon Theatre. It features three actresses in the role of Cher and follows her over the course of her career. The official Broadway cast recording will be out May 10.
