Emmys 2014: Seth Meyers Details Underdog Spirit of Hosting Gig

Seth Meyers is planning on a hosting an Emmys broadcast this weekendthat will be lighter in tone than last years overlong ceremony, which Neil Patrick Harris hosted. To accomplish this, he has assembled a group of writers that includes his Late Night staff, Chappelles Show co-creator and co-writer NealBrennan, comedian and former SNL writer John Mulaney, selectWeekend Update writers and, so he told The Hollywood Reporter, Amy [Poehler] and Tina [Fey].

Everyone at the Emmys is there because their work is being honored, so I dont picture my position as tearing that down, he said, naming Steve Martin who co-hosted the Oscars in 2010 with Alec Baldwin as an inspiration. But as a comedian hosting an event like this, I think you can poke fun about the fact that were taking it all a little seriously.

Meyerswas tight-lipped on topics for his bits, but cited the fact that the broadcast is happening in an undesirable Monday night time slot as a possibility. There will be a nice underdog spirit about the fact that were doing it on a Monday, he said. The one thing he did promise THR was that the show would end on time. Im an incredibly punctual person, he said.

The series with the most nominations this year include Breaking Bad,Game of Thrones, Veep, Orange Is the New BlackandTrue Detective. The stars of the latter show, Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, are up against one another in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series category. Other notable nods include Modern Family, which has received a fifth consecutive Outstanding Comedy Series nomination, and Big Bang Theory star Jim Parons, who received his sixth Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series nomination.

The Emmys will air on August 25th at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.
