Walking Dead Spinoff Could Be Prequel: Report

AMC is planning a Walking Dead spinoff for 2015, and early buzz suggests this companion series will be a prequel to the originals zombie apocalypse storyline.

According to TV Line, the rumored plot will focus on the events leading to the zombie epidemic, along with early efforts to contain its devastating spread. Though AMC representatives declined to comment on the buzz, Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman recently toldIGN that the series will be set in a really different location with completely different people.

Walking Dead Recap: The Flu and the Zombies Pummel the Prison

We are going to see an entirely different corner of the Walking Dead, Kirkman said. It definitely wont be set in Georgia, I can at least say that. Its important to us that this show exists on its own. The spinoff has to be a show worthy of existing, or else weve all sold out. So thats something were all working hard towards doing, and I think we can pull it off. I think that the ideal situation is, when youre watching the spinoff, youre like, Wow, this is a really awesome show. The whole other show doesnt need to exist for this show to be cool and stand on its own.

While the spinoff wont air until 2015, Kirkman is keeping busy with two more upcoming TV adaptations. One is a companion to an upcoming exorcism comic called Outcast; the other is based on his heist-centered comic Thief of Thieves.

Kirkman spoke with Rolling Stone last month about his various projects, noting that he has an idea in mind for how to conclude the Walking Dead comics.

I have an end in mind for the comic, and I actually wrote the final scene the other day, he said. I know what I want the final dialogue to be. It may change, but the interesting thing to me is that I can never tell anyone involved in this show what the ending that I have in mind is because the comic book most likely will outlive the show. I cant have any nugget of what I have planned making it into the show, because if the show ends on Season 12 but the comic doesnt end for, eight, 10 or 20 more years, my ending will be spoiled. That would piss me off.
