Netflix is adapting One Hundred Years of Solitude, Gabriel Garca Mrquezs acclaimed 1967 novel, into an original Spanish-language series. The late authors sons Rodrigo Garcia and Gonzalo Garcia Barcha will executive produce the show, which will be filmed primarily in the writers native Colombia.
In a statement about the project, Garcia noted that their father was reluctant to sell the books film rights for decades because he believed that it could not be made under the time constraints of a feature film, or that producing it in a language other than Spanish would not do it justice. He continued, But in the current golden age of series, with the level of talented writing and directing, the cinematic quality of content, and the acceptance by worldwide audiences of programs in foreign languages, the time could not be better to bring an adaptation to the extraordinary global viewership that Netflix provides. We are excited to support Netflix and the filmmakers in this venture, and eager to see the final product.

No additional details about the series, like casting or a filming timetable, have been announced as of this writing.
Mrquez, who died in 2014 at age 87, is widely considered one of the most accomplished authors of the 20th century. The writer, who helped develop the style of magic realism, received the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature.
